January 4 Update: Kinder Morgan pipeline cleanup continues

City of Walnut Creek and County Flood Control staff continue to receive updates from regulatory authorities and Kinder Morgan on work underway to cleanup the gas leak first detected in late November.

The leak stems from a rupture to a Kinder Morgan fuel pipeline that runs through Walnut Creek.  Work is being performed to route rain water around the work site to aid in the fuel recovery effort.

While the majority of work is being performed during daylight hours, you can expect some nighttime work, including generators for lights so that the cleanup team can monitor the site overnight.  At this time, we do not know how long the remediation recover will take.

Monitoring of the effort is being done by the State's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the Environmental Protection Agency.  City of Walnut Creek staff and County Flood Control staff are also keeping a watch on the efforts throughout the remediation process.  The State is posting updates on the Department of Fish and Wildlife website.

More information will be shared with City residents as it becomes available.  The City has been assured by multiple regulatory agencies that there is no public health danger due to the leak or the remediation, but we will continue to work with the Public Health Division of Contra Costa Health Services for ongoing updates.
