DeSaulnier, who succeeded George Miller in Congress in 2015 and has an extensive history of public service in California, expressed his opposition to certain policies and actions.
On May 6, 2025, DeSaulnier highlighted the issue of LGBTQ+ youth suicide rates and criticized President Trump’s decision to cut specialized services at the suicide prevention hotline. He stated: “LGBTQ+ kids are disproportionately dying by suicide, but unconscionably President Trump wants to cut the specialized LGBTQ+ services at the suicide prevention hotline. I spoke on the House floor against this immoral move and will continue to speak out until the President reverses.”
The following day, on May 7, 2025, he participated in a hearing with @EdWorkforceDems where he raised concerns about Republican efforts that target federal programs designed to combat discrimination. He tweeted: “At today’s @EdWorkforceDems hearing, I expressed concern over the Republican attacks on federal programs that investigate and protect against discrimination including antisemitism and islamophobia.”
Later that same day, DeSaulnier addressed attempts by Republicans to reduce funding for essential programs relied upon by many Americans. He noted his support for a discharge petition alongside fellow Democrats as a strategy to prompt legislative action. His tweet read: “The Republican budget attempts to slash programs that millions of Americans rely on. Today, I joined my @HouseDemocrats colleagues in supporting a discharge petition, one of the tools of the minority party in Congress, to try to force a vote on a bill that would prohibit”
Mark DeSaulnier’s political career includes serving in multiple governmental roles within California before his tenure in Congress began.
