Norm Van Brocklin born March 15, 1926; raised in Walnut Creek

Norm Van Brocklin was born March 15, 1926. He grew up in Walnut Creek, California, where he attended Acalanes High School and played three sports. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he played college football at the University of Oregon. He led the team to national recognition and earned All-America honors. Van Brocklin entered the NFL in 1949. He played quarterback and punter for the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles. He won two NFL championships, one with each team. He was selected to nine Pro Bowls and led the league in passing three times. He was named NFL MVP in 1960. After retiring as a player, he coached the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons. He recorded the first winning seasons for both teams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. His early years in Walnut Creek shaped his path to a professional football career.
